City police on high alert
Hyderabad News
Wednesday, 14 May 2008

The city police were put on a ‘high alert’ following the serial blasts in Jaipur on Tuesday. The vigil at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, and other important places, roads and sensitive areas in the city was stepped up from Tuesday evening immediately after the Jaipur blasts.

"Watch is being particularly kept at the entry points into the city. Our men have been instructed to conduct frisking," city police commissioner B Prasada Rao told TOI.

The striking similarities between the Jaipur blasts and those occurred in Hyderabad on August 25, 2007 have put the top cops of Hyderabad and Cyberabad on alert. More than 40 people were killed in the blasts at two crowded places in Hyderabad in August, 2007. The terror attacks at Gokul Chat at the busy Koti and at the Lumbini laserium in the heart of the city near the Secretariat were carried out on a Saturday evening around 7.45 pm. A bomb placed at the commercially important Dilsukhnagar area was detected in time and defused around the same time.

Incidentally, the blasts in Jaipur were also carried out between 7 pm and 8 pm.

"We are gathering more details about the blasts in Jaipur to compare the similarities," Prasada Rao said.
With the blasts in Hyderabad being still fresh in the memory of people, the latest terror attacks in Jaipur have put the Hyderabad police once again on the alert.

Gangster Ayub Khan held
Hyderabad News
Wednesday, 14 May 2008

HYDERABAD: Alleged gangster Ayub Khan against whom 48 cases, including eight murders, were registered at different police stations in Hyderabad was arrested by Task Force police in Gulbarga in Karnataka on Tuesday. He was staying there with his wife.

Ayub Khan, 39, who was born and grew up in Fateh Darwaza in the city, reportedly began his tryst with crime when he was just 16 years.

In 1990, the school dropout committed a robbery in Hussainialam and in the same year he was involved in an attempt to murder one Khadir in the same area.

According to an official release, Ayub Khan along with his associates actively participated in communal riots in 1990 and targeted places of worship in the old city. During this period, several cases, including murder, attempt to murder, attack on public servants, arson and looting were registered against Ayub Khan in different police stations of Hyderabad.

A history-sheet was opened against him in Hussainialam police station in 1991 and was transferred to the Kalapathar police station later as Ayub shifted his residence to 19-2-148/4, Tadban, Kalapathar.

Since then, Ayub Khan has been maintaining a gang of 20 members and resorting to crimes, police said.

He reportedly attacked police personnel with deadly weapons when they tried to apprehend him several times.

In one such incident, police opened fire on him due to which he received bullet injuries on his leg at Kamatipura in 1992.

In 2002, Ayub Khan reportedly killed advocate Mannan Ghori and was arrested along with his associates. He was in judicial custody for nearly three years and was released on bail on February 25, 2005.

According to police, even when he was in jail, Ayub Khan organised his associates to threaten and eliminate his rivals and suspected police informers.

Shahrukh leave Hyderabad fans disappointed
Sports News
Monday, 12 May 2008

Hyderabad: Unmindful of the sweltering heat, die-hard fans filled the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium here, but were disappointed not to see their heroes - actor Shahrukh Khan and cricketer Shoaib Akhtar - in 'action'.

Braving the scorching sun, the enthusiasts took their seats much before the match began between Hyderabad's Deccan Chargers and Kolkata Knight Riders. Even 42 degree Celsius temperature could not keep the crowd away from enjoying the Sunday game.

The 40,000-capacity stadium was almost full. It was the best crowd so far at this stadium though the hosts have lost all their three matches played here and are at the bottom of the points table with just two wins from eight outings. It was also the first day-night IPL match to be played here.

Many fans turned up to catch a glimpse of Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan, who owns the Kolkata team. But they were disappointed not to find King Khan in the stands.

'Where r u SRK' asked a placard carried by one of the fans. Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) officials said they have no information if the superstar would be coming to cheer the team.

However, another Bollywood star and Shahrukh Khan's friend Arbaaz Khan was present to cheer the Kolkata team.

HCA secretary Shivalal Yadav said all tickets for the match were sold out. "But I don't know what is the contributing factor for this," he said. IT companies bought 15,000 tickets for their employees.

Finance Ministry agrees to provide funds for Hyderabad Metro
Business News
Sunday, 11 May 2008

NEW DELHI: Finance Ministry has agreed in principle to provide funds worth about Rs 2,000 crore for the Hyderabad Metro Rail Project estimated to cost over Rs 10,000 crore under the public-private partnership.

Four bidders, including a consortium of Reliance Energy Limited (REL) and Canada based Bombardier, have been pre-qualified for the project and technical bids have been invited.

"The Hyderabad Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) has been recommended by the Empowered Committee and Empowered Institution for viability gap funding (VGF), though final approval will require the consent of Finance Minister P Chidambaram as well," said finance ministry sources.

Once approved by the Finance Minister, the funds could be released to the state government in a phased manner to implement the project, sources said.

HuJI may be behind Jaipur blasts: Sources

Terror struck yet again — this time in the 'Pink City' Jaipur, at the busiest market, at the busiest hour, aimed with chilling precision to kill, maim, terrify and cleave the country. At last count, the toll was 80 killed, and with over 150 injured, it could go up.   Bangladesh-based Harkut-ul-Jehadi Islami(HuJI) is suspected to be behind the blasts that has taken the state authorities by surprise, Home Ministry sources said.

The sources ruled out the use of RDX in the carefully orchestrated low-intensity explosions which were suspected to have been set off from cycles in areas including near Hawa Mahal which are frequented by domestic and foreign tourists.

It is clear that the bombers planned a bloody attack. The first bomb struck a temple dedicated to the Hindu monkey god Hanuman, whose divinity is celebrated every Tuesday. Eyewitnesses said the temple was packed with devotees offering prayers on their way home from work.

"The next bomb was near Johari bazaar and looked like it was placed near a Muslim jewellery shop," an eyewitness Lalit Khateri said. "It was very busy with Hindus and Muslims. It was an attack not on Hindus or Muslims but Indians."
